What's in the game
Based on the Kickstarter campaign and Cryptozoic's production updates, the line includes:
- Core Book with the rules for playing in the Land of Ooo, including 20 species and 12 subclasses.
- Adventure Book with ready-to-run adventures, including a learn-as-you-play intro.
- About 60 magic items and 40+ new monsters.
- Card decks: Adventure Twist, Random Encounter and Sweet Dosh cards.
- GM screen, dice bags, dice boxes and a slipcase for the books.
- Pre-made character sheets for show characters such as Marceline.
How the rules work
If you have played D&D 5E, you already know the core: roll a d20, add modifiers, beat a target number. The Adventure Time layer adds species from Ooo, show-themed subclasses, and card-driven Adventure Twists that throw the kind of weird turns the show is known for.
Development began with a custom "Yes, And" style system before moving to 5E compatibility, which is why you will still see that phrase in older articles.
Is it good for new players?
The intro adventure is designed to teach the game while you play, and 5E is the most widely known RPG ruleset, so it is a friendly first tabletop game for fans of the show. We'll publish a full hands-on review once the books arrive in December.
