Buddies follow you into every adventure. Each one gives a stat bonus and an ability on the F key. Everyone starts with BMO; the others drop from adventures and the Dungeon Train.

For bosses, BMO or Peppermint Butler, because their abilities make enemies take extra damage. For crowds, Tree Trunks charms everything nearby. The Keeper is great against enemies with nasty specials but does nothing to bosses.
Open Manage, pick your hero, open the buddy tab (the smiley face), choose the buddy and press Equip. A rescued buddy is not equipped automatically.
Feed them Bacon Pancakes at Ice King's upgrade station in the hub. You can buy Bacon Pancakes from Choose Goose's market.
F. Abilities have a cooldown, so save them for bosses or big groups.
